Bbc And Itv Team Up For Free Satellite Service

A new joint venture from the BBC and ITV is to provide a free-to-view satellite service for thousands of homes across the UK.

Available to 98 per cent of homes with a satellite dish, Freesat will broadcast 80 digital television and radio channels with up to 200 on offer by the end of the year.

Though Freesat users will have to pay a one-off charge for the service - covering a satellite dish, set-top box and an installation fee - there will be no monthly subscription charge.

The service will also be available to homes that are currently unable to receive Freeview TV.

Emma Scott from Freesat told BBC Radio 5Live: "It's got 98 per cent coverage across the UK and it's only homes that really don't have a clear line of sight to the satellite that can't get it, or certain listed buildings.

"But unlike Freeview you can receive Freesat across the country, which means that in those areas that at the moment can't get access to free digital television this is the first time that you can get free digital TV."

Freesat also hopes that its service - which provides HD programming from the BBC and ITV - will encourage more Britons to take advantage of high-definition programme.

An estimated ten million homes have an HD-ready television but do not currently use an HD receiver of subscription service.

Michael Grade, ITV's executive chairman, said the launch of Freesat was "the final piece in the digital jigsaw".

"We will launch our HD service with an unrivalled line up of premium football including the FA Cup, England internationals and Uefa Champions League from next season," he added.

Suri Cruise's Baby Bottle Backlash

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ campaign to convince the world they are a normal family has taken a hit in the form of questions over their parenting skills.

‘Experts’ have taken the A-list couple to task over recent pictures that show that daughter Suri is still being bottle fed at aged 2.

"Most pediatricians recommend a bottle should be given up by age 1 - almost certainly by 18 months," say Dr. Charlotte Cowan, author of the Dr. Hippo book series.

The Doc suggests to Usmagazine.com that the family's constant travelling could be a factor in Suri's reluctance to give up the bottle.

"When babies are challenged, their diet is upset, their sleep is upset," Cowan tells the mag.

"They will regress back to previous habits...lingering with a bottle is comforting. You could argue that her parents have decided that this is not the time to try to wean her off if they're traveling frequently."

However, psychiatrist Dr. Keith Ablow believes that Suri's habit is not harmful to the adorable tot.

"We don't have a wealth of experience that suggests from a psychological point of view children are harmed by using a bottle for too long," he says.

Hundreds strip naked in Vienna for artist Tunick

VIENNA (Reuters) - About 1,800 people stripped naked on Sunday for U.S. photographer Spencer Tunick at the stadium that will host the Euro 2008 soccer final.

Tunick, who regularly stages such mass nude events, arranged his subjects in the colored seats of the venue, having been told by organizers the grass was too precious.

"It will be fun. Austria is very conservative. This might bring more openness," said Michael, a 20-year-old Austrian who drove for two hours to take part. Others came from Germany and elsewhere.

Tunick spoke to his models over the public address system, telling the men and women to spread out in sections of the stands and strike different poses. He told them not to smile or laugh and to remove sunglasses.

The stadium stages seven matches of the Euro 2008 soccer championship, being jointly hosted by Switzerland and Austria next month, including the final on June 29.

"This very special ephemeral installation that we are inviting you to be part of is devised to capture and combine the spirit of sports, the grand sweeping waves of stadium architecture and the abstract relation of the human form to modern structures," Tunick said on his website.

One of Tunick's latest stunts was on a Swiss glacier, where 600 people stripped off in temperatures of about 10 Celsius (50 F) last August.

His biggest was last year in Mexico City with 18,000 people. The next after Vienna are planned for Cork, Ireland, on June 17 and Dublin on June 21.
